According to an article on BBC News, scientists have managed to push a DVD over the fledgling Internet2 network in just about 30 seconds, yielding a throughput of 923mbps over a 10,000 kilometer distance (from Sunnyvale, CA to Amsterdam).
Although these speeds are commonplace these days for short-haul connections and even between desktop computers, this is a first for the Internet2 network, being put together by 200 universities and sponsors.
