Gates attempts to close the design gap at WinHEC

An article in the New York Times runs over some of the more amusing aspects of the long-standing Apple-Microsoft debate over innovation.

Many who saw news stories from last week's conference noted that the "revolutionary" HP computer that was being shown off looked like a combination of the 1st and 2nd generation iMac's with additional lights.

More interesting is the debate over some of the "revolutionary" features of Microsoft's 2005-slated OS update called Longhorn. They have announced that this new version of the OS will take advantage of recent advances in graphics technology and use OpenGL (pardon me, I should say DirectX) to handle window overlays and transparency for normal operating system windows.

Apple execs are quick to point out that this technology has been in OS X since at least 2002.
