Although the article makes one literary allusion (to the movie Short Circuit), I thought instead of a second movie that the concept reminded me of: Demolition Man. In the 1993 flick, a bunch of bad guys were having a virtual meeting around a table and each of them was represented by a camera and LCD screen on a stick.
